      Epictetus Biography, Stoic Philosopher

"We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them."
      — Epictetus

      Overview & Quick Summary

Epictetus was a Greek-born Stoic philosopher who spent his early life in Rome as an enslaved person. After gaining his freedom following the death of Emperor Nero, he established a renowned school of philosophy in Greece, becoming one of the most influential teachers of the ancient world. Epictetus never wrote anything down; instead, his sharp, pragmatic lectures were transcribed by his student Arrian and compiled into the Discourses and the handbook Enchiridion, forming a core cornerstone of Stoic moral philosophy.

      Key Life Events & Context

Born into slavery in Hierapolis (modern-day Turkey), Epictetus was brought to Rome as the property of a wealthy secretary to Nero. Despite his bondage, he was permitted to study under the famous Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus. Sometime during his youth, he suffered a permanent injury that left him with a severe limp for the rest of his life. After securing his freedom around 68 AD, Epictetus began teaching philosophy in Rome until Emperor Domitian banished all philosophers from Italy in 93 AD. Undeterred, he moved to Nicopolis, Greece, where he founded a famous philosophical academy attended by young elites from across the empire—including future historians and statesmen.

      Core Philosophy & Major Themes

The Discipline of Desire and Aversion: Freedom comes from desiring only what is within our control (our intentions, choices, and beliefs) and being indifferent to what isn't (wealth, status, physical body, or reputation).

True Freedom Is Mental: External constraints—such as physical disability, imprisonment, or social status—cannot enslave a mind that refuses to surrender its moral power.

Philosophy as Everyday Training: Epictetus treated philosophy not as academic theory, but as athletic training for the soul. He constantly pressed his students to apply principles to concrete daily situations rather than simply memorizing texts.

Why His Wisdom Still Matters Today

Epictetus offers a hard-hitting, compassionate manual for mental independence. His teachings directly inspired 20th-century Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), proving that while we cannot control what happens around us, we hold total dominion over our internal response.
